Yay for DNS Outages

Earlier yesterday, millions of bots, e-mail harvesters, and web-crawlers were disappointed to discover that donniepinkston.net was offline. (A few people might have cared too…?)

The problem turned out to be my DNS nameservers; both the primary and secondary nameserver went down at the same time. I use the free zoneedit.com DNS services, so I guess it’s part of the deal.

The “downside” was no e-mail or website access for a while, but the upside was that it gave me a much needed chance to boot over into Windows and back up the data on those partitions. Linux still has issues with NTFS, so that data has not been very accessible to me.

“Wait, you booted your mailserver into Windows?!Sigh, yes, my server is a dual-boot system, for the time being. It was promoted to “server” because the old stand-in died, and I just haven’t had the time to get that all sorted out. Soon it’ll all be straightened out, though. A real server with real performance and reliability. Sweet.
